How to Enable XMP and Why Your RAM Isn’t Running at Advertised Speeds

You finished your build, installed Windows, and opened Task Manager to admire your hardware. Instead of showing 3600 MHz, your expensive DDR4 kit is stuck at 2133 MHz or 2666 MHz. This is not a manufacturing defect. Your motherboard is simply running the memory at its failsafe JEDEC standard until you manually enable the Intel XMP profile or AMD EXPO settings.

Running your RAM below its rated speed costs you performance. In CPU-bound games, this difference can mean losing ten to fifteen percent of your frame rate, particularly in the one-percent lows that cause stuttering. The fix takes less than five minutes, but it requires a trip into your BIOS.

Checking Your Current Memory Speed

Before changing anything, confirm the current state. In Windows 10 or 11, open Task Manager and navigate to the Performance tab. Select Memory from the left sidebar. Look for the Speed field. If the number displayed is lower than the number printed on your RAM box, you need to enable the profile.

Alternatively, you can check within the BIOS itself. Restart your PC and press the Delete or F2 key repeatedly as soon as the manufacturer logo appears. The exact key varies by motherboard manufacturer, but Delete is the most common for consumer boards from ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and ASRock.

Enabling the Profile

Once inside the BIOS, look for one of the following labels depending on your platform:

  • Intel systems: XMP, XMP 1, XMP 2, or Extreme Memory Profile
  • AMD systems: DOCP, EOCP, or EXPO (on AM5 boards)

On most modern motherboards, this setting sits in the main EZ Mode dashboard near the memory information. If you are in Advanced Mode, navigate to the Ai Tweaker or Overclocking tab.
